The significance however lies more in its attempt to turn this result into a process that can be structured and reproduced — the emphasis falls not only on thinness but on internal protocols, assembly sequence, production discipline and the ability to maintain consistency at a scale where the smallest deviation can become consequential.

From Record to Method

In ultra thin watchmaking, it’s one thing to arrive at the edge of physical possibility, and another to show that such reduction can support a limited edition without collapsing into fragility or one-offs. Chaykin appears aware of this distinction. The case alone passes through around 40 routing checkpoints, and the wider production process is built around minimal clearances, tightly controlled tolerances and extensive final verification.

If that were all, the watch might still risk becoming a purely technical object. The familiar anthropomorphic display language remains unmistakably Chaykin. Here, the “eyes” become transparent sapphire mystery indications with a structure stripped back until they seem to hover. ThinKing Mystery does not just reduce material; it turns reduction into an illusion. Its technical exercise reads as though its visual identity has been reimagined from within the constraints of making such a watch.

The in-house Caliber K.23-3.1 is integrated directly into the caseback, serving as the movement’s mainplate, while the case itself functions as a load-bearing structure intended to preserve geometry in such a thin profile. A high-precision, non-magnetic alloy was selected for its rigidity and corrosion resistance, a reminder that in a watch like this, material choice is central to whether the concept can exist in usable form at all. The same logic runs through the movement. The balance assembly is laid out in a single plane as two interlocking toothed wheels, while the ultra thin barrel has been revised with a reinforced bridge and a barrel arbor using tungsten carbide balls. Even the increase in power reserve, from 32 to 38 hours, feels meaningful here, because every gain has to be wrestled from a construction in which nothing comes without sacrifice.

Its transparent “eyes” use sapphire mystery discs, creating the illusion of floating indications with almost no visual interruption.

Engineering the Illusion

The mystery indication is equally telling. In the earlier constructions, motion was transmitted to wheels mounted on a central axis, which introduced the possibility of axial and radial runout. In ThinKing Mystery, the sapphire disks and a three-roller guiding system increase stability, reduce radial runout and limit energy losses from the mainspring — further proving that the mystery display is not simply a visual embellishment but a technical rethink in itself.

Beyond the movement, Chaykin rejected a crown from the outset as it would add thickness and burden the silhouette. In its place come two auxiliary tools for winding and setting, each equipped with safety systems to prevent overwinding. The strap, too, becomes part of the technical solution, with titanium stiffeners and elastic inserts designed to reduce stress on the case.
