Junghans Meister MEGA

Since the launch of the MEGA 1 – the world’s first radio-controlled wristwatch – in 1990, Junghans has continued to develop ever-more appealing versions of the concept. Launched earlier this year in the brand’s home town of Schramberg, the new Calibre J101 comprises 146 components, all tested to the highest criteria and the result of four years of R&D.

Junghans is already a master of radio-controlled watches and clocks and the new Meister MEGA relies on receiving time signals from radio transmitters situated on three continents (DCF77 in Mainflingen, Germany; MSF in Anthorn, UK; JJY40 in Fukushima, Japan; JY60 in Kyushu, Japan; and WWVB in Fort Collins, USA). The position of the seconds hand – which moves around the dial in half-second steps – is measured against received time information 1,440 times per day and adjusted when necessary. The transmitters have a deviation of just 0.006 seconds in one million years and the Meister MEGA itself, a maximum deviation of 0.02 seconds in radio-controlled mode. If there is no reception in an area, the watch runs automatically with an impressive accuracy of eight seconds a year.

In addition to utilising some of the most advanced technology in the field, the Meister MEGA also features the same sleek aesthetic that makes Junghans one of the leaders in minimal Teutonic design. A sunray-brushed anthracite dial featuring a stealthy world map and reception instructions, is set into a stainless-steel case with slim profile (9.6mm high). The high-tech look is completed by a brushed stainless-steel bracelet. Simpler versions of the watch are also available without the map on the dial and with leather straps.

Easy to operate, when crossing into a different time zone, the watch can be reset in increments of one hour using the crown, or by pressing the recessed pusher at 4 o’clock, which will allow the watch’s receiver to look for a new signal. If the watch is not reset manually, the clock will synchronise to a new time signal between 2 and 3 o’clock in the morning.
