Gucci is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Gucci Swiss timepieces! What stands out to you as the highlight of half a century of Gucci Swiss timepieces?
This 50th anniversary is a landmark moment in Gucci’s watchmaking history. From 1972 to this day, the House’s craftsmanship and originality have stood the test of time, capturing diverse styles and materials to suit everyone’s individuality. Every watch launched over the last 50 years carries these bold and unique qualities, fusing Swiss know-how and Gucci’s signature flair. The way Gucci continues to blend this imaginative vision with unparalleled expertise and care is a real highlight of this incredible journey. Another is how Gucci continually embraces change and pushes for innovation, as seen with the launch of a debut High Watchmaking collection last year — and now the story continues with a second collection.

Gucci Celebrates 50 Years of Watchmaking

In 2021, the high watchmaking collection was an impressive feat from Gucci. How did you build on that concept in 2022?
Last year, Gucci was extremely proud to launch a debut High Watchmaking collection. In 2022, the House builds on that incredible success, reaffirming its intentions and amazing the world with yet more intricate and original timepieces. Bright, bold and beautiful, this visionary second High Watchmaking collection celebrates this new step in Gucci’s horological journey. Launched with a special fairground-inspired video and event in Geneva, this joyful collection brings together bold gem colors, celestial motifs, and the most refined Swiss made watchmaking complications in a series of extraordinary designs. Highlights include the captivating Gucci 25H Skeleton Tourbillon with its see-through dial, and the pioneering G-Timeless Planetarium, with a brand- new Dancing Hours Flying Tourbillon: a real feat of micro-engineering.

What was the inspiration behind the concept of “Gucci Wonderland” for display of all the high horology timepieces?
The idea is you are entering a mesmerizing magical fairground; a unique and unforgettable Gucci world. New editions of several pillars of Gucci’s watchmaking collection, including the Gucci 25H, the G-Timeless and the Grip, are contained within its carnival atmosphere and form part of its rollercoaster rides. As part of the kaleidoscopic “Gucci Wonderland,” the complications shine with rainbow-vibrant gems and astronomic references. It’s a universe filled with delight and wonder, a perfect celebration of this joyful collection.

The Gucci 25H Skeleton Tourbillon is a bold statement, especially in recycled white and yellow gold. How did this complication come about in the sporty Gucci 25H collection?
The Gucci 25H collection is inspired by the sleek forms of contemporary architecture and is defined by its clean lines, contrasting finishes and integrated bracelet. Highlighting Gucci’s understanding of fine watchmaking codes and epitomizing its aesthetic, the design represents a milestone in the House’s horological history. With some automatic styles fitted with the first in-house GG727.25 caliber and encased in an ultra thin 7.2mm case with a sleek bezel, Gucci wanted to keep this ultra slim, sporty profile in mind when devising the tourbillion version for the High Watchmaking collection. It was also a desire to push boundaries in a new direc¬¬tion and create something different. With its 8mm-thick case and see-through dial, the Gucci 25H Skeleton Tourbillon is entirely designed around the movement, which sits above the base of the dial to create an illusion of floating mechanics above the bridge. Attesting to the piece’s craftsmanship is the flying tourbillon at six o’clock, which regulates timekeeping and adds a contemporary, decorative touch, while the skeleton hands suggest a subtle layering effect.

The ladies’ collection also features high complications. How did you incorporate these complications into a poetic dial like that of the G-Timeless Dancing Bees?
The G-Timeless collection is known for using the House’s eclectic motifs, including the iconic bee. The High Watchmaking editions feature incredible tourbillon complications and diamond-set decoration. The compelling G-Timeless Dancing Bees features a shifting flight of 12 bees — with each shimmering insect moving independently — and a beautiful tourbillon, set at 12 o’clock. Offered in several captivating variations, the newest iteration has also been masterfully crafted with two rare opal varieties to form a miniature chevron-patterned parquet design on a mother-of-pearl dial. It’s a spectacular addition to the collection, full of poeticism and wit.
