Grand Seiko’s Wintery Beauty

Inspired by Japan’s tranquil snowscapes, these Grand Seiko timepieces celebrate winter as a season of quiet strength and serene grace

The climate of Japan is remarkably diverse, which is to be expected given that the chain of islands stretches from the sub-tropical south up to the sub-arctic north. And while not all of the country experiences snow, in the northern islands, with their many peaks and chill climate, it’s common to see much of the land blanketed under white sheets in the wintertime. As such, snow, or Yuki, plays an important role in the cultural landscape of Japan — representing not just the power of nature, but also the purity, serenity and beauty of winter.

It’s these latter three elements that Grand Seiko especially evokes with dials made in alignment with its Nature of Time philosophy. And winter, with its crisp whites and cold blues, has proven to be a fertile ground for the brand’s dial designers, from the iconic “Snowflake” to the more recent Spring Drive U.F.A. There’re plenty of wintery dials to be found at Grand Seiko, and we’re willing to bet that not one of them will leave you cold.

SBGE285 — A Misty Mountain

Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SBGE285

Some watches are made with an occasion in mind; others, like the SBGE285, are made for all occasions. With a style conforming to the Evolution 9 design language, this dual time Spring Drive is made for legibility and comfort. The High-Intensity Titanium case is light, and the dial, with the broad hour markers and hands that define Evolution 9, is easy to read. The fixed 24-hour bezel ensures that reading the second time zone is a cinch, too. Naturally, function is important, but the SBGE285 doesn’t neglect form either — it’s a watch that embodies the best of modern sports watch identity, but as is so often the case with Grand Seiko, it’s the dial that maketh the watch. The white dial, sometimes silvery, sometimes creamy in complexion, is inspired not by winter snowfall, as you might expect, but rather, by the chill mountain mists of Nagano in winter, a sight that surrounds the home of Spring Drive.

SBGA211 — A Gentle Snowflake

Grand Seiko Heritage SBGA211

In the annals of iconic Grand Seiko models, SBGA211, better known as the “Snowflake,” sits right near the very top. The predecessor to this model (SBGA011) debuted in 2010, and quickly earned a cult following. It was emblematic of all that Grand Seiko stood for: the Spring Drive movement, the exceptional finish of the titanium case, and above all, a dial that was endlessly appealing thanks to its seeming simplicity. The subtle, organic snow-like shimmer of the Snowflake’s dial is inspired less by a single mote, but rather, by a calm blanket of snow on the slopes of Mount Hotaka. Granted, it might not be the most dramatic example of Grand Seiko’s Nature of Time, but it’s as captivating today as it was the day we first saw it.

SBGY007 — A Lake of Ice

Grand Seiko Elegance SBGY007

The SBGY007 is an elegant gem inspired by Omiwatari — a long ridge of ice that forms on the surface of Lake Suwa, where the ice from one side of the lake meets the other in dramatic fashion. Local legends say this raised icy line is where the gods walk over the frozen lake, but for Grand Seiko’s designers, it’s a source of inspiration. The soft silver dial channels the feel of this snow-covered ice, and it’s the perfect sort of dial for a watch as dressy as the SBGY007. With its smaller 38.5mm case, a slender profile afforded by the manually wound Spring Drive Caliber 9R31 and refined leather strap, it’s a wintery watch, but one that’s far from harsh.

SLGB003 — A Frozen Forest

Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGB003

One of the most recent Yuki inspired timepieces to emerge from Grand Seiko’s hallowed halls is the SLGB003, a watch that is remarkable enough to merit three additional letters on the dial — U.F.A., which stands for Ultra Fine Accuracy, a sobriquet it has earned. The SLGB003 is accurate to an incredible ± 20 seconds a year, making it the most accurate watch with a mainspring, thanks to the incredible Spring Drive 9RB2.

Of course, this new technology demands a new dial motif, and Grand Seiko has kept with the wintery tones, with an intricately textured icy blue dial inspired by the Kirigamine highlands in winter — where ice and snow cover the landscape, creating a forest of frozen trees. The titanium case and Evolution 9 dial language are the perfect counterpoint to this crisp pattern.

Note: Some Grand Seiko watches are communicated as having water resistance in ‘bars’, a unit of atmospheric pressure, while others are rated to a depth in meters. At Revolution we use a ‘meters’ rating for consistency, and convert one bar as 10 meters of depth rating.
