Bovet Celebrates 10 Years of the 19Thirty with Three Stripped Back Dials

Back to basics for a Bovet icon.

Bovet has just marked the 10th anniversary of one of their most iconic watches — the 19Thirty — with not one but three particularly handsome limited edition pieces in blue, green or black dial variants.

Before we dive into the newest offerings, here is a quick recap on the 19Thirty as a whole. Initially released in 2015, this design was a tribute to Bovet’s incredible legacy in pocketwatches — taking for inspiration a 1930s-era Bovet, one of the last pocket watches the brand would produce, and converting it into a wristwatch, turning it into a timepiece that was intended by brand owner Pascal Raffy, as an everyday watch, with the brand’s first steel case and a complicated aesthetic. The five-part dial included separate displays for hours and seconds, a power reserve indicator, and plenty of fine finishing to keep it in line with the opulence and drama we expect of Bovet.

The latest trio of limited editions don’t stray too far from this established formula — the Fluerier case, with its t-bar style lugs and crown at 12, is still the defining feature of the watch, and the size — at 42mm in diameter and 9.05mm is unchanged, and. The big news is the dials themselves. These new watches offer a minimalist take on the 19Thirty dial design, offering something sleek that is intended to appeal to a younger audience. All three are lacquer dials, one in a rich olive green called ‘In The Dusk’, then there’s a rich blue version and finally, a black version called ‘Queen of Trees’ that features glittering inclusions. All are powered by the caliber 15BM04, a large, manually wound caliber that is entirely fitting considering the pocket watch origins of the design. It’s pretty movement, as far as these things go. Nice industrial finishes pair with a design that is pleasingly symmetrical, with a balanced centre wheel and balance cock dominating the space at the bottom of the case.

Bovet has always been something of a niche proposition, with a pretty high sticker price, low volume and an aesthetic that is all its own. This series of limited editions represents a shift in approach. There’s enough of what makes Bovet Bovet in evidence, but the simple dials, which are still quite stunning, are dressed down and feel far more accessible. The green dial in particular, is a real winner.
