A. Lange & Söhne Strengthens U.S. Midwest Presence with New Chicago Boutique

The opening of a new A. Lange & Söhne boutique in Chicago’s Tribune Tower marks a renewed focus on the manufacture’s presence in the U.S. Midwest and underlines the value of experiencing watches in person

By opening a new boutique in Chicago, A. Lange & Söhne is quietly making a couple of statements. Firstly, they are emphasising the importance of the U.S. Midwest market for the storied German brand. And secondly, with a boutique designed to mirror the ethos and atmosphere of the manufacture in Glashütte, A. Lange & Söhne is reminding us that watches, particularly rare, hand-finished masterpieces, are best experienced in person.

Located in the Tribune Tower, one of Chicago’s most recognisable historic landmarks, the boutique is a deliberate step in Lange’s global retail strategy. As the manufacture’s ninth point of sale in the U.S., the opening signals a renewed focus on a region with a long-standing culture of serious watch collecting.

Chicago is a mature watch market, home to plenty of enthusiasts who understand A. Lange & Söhne. This is less about broadening reach, and more about reinforcing relationships with collectors who already understand what the brand represents.

Spanning 1,409 square feet, the boutique has been designed to encourage the kind of unhurried engagement Lange believes its watches deserve. Three distinct client seating areas, including two private lounges, create an environment for close inspection, extended conversation and time spent with the watches both on and off the wrist.

Installations invite visitors to explore key elements of the manufacture’s identity, from the mechanical theatre of the ZEITWERK to the technical artistry of Lange’s tourbillons and the hand-applied finishing visible on every in-house movement.

That emphasis on direct engagement is central to how the brand views its boutiques. “Each timepiece in our collection reflects a familial bond between our watchmakers and collectors, one that is best experienced by putting a Lange watch in one’s hands and on one’s wrist,” says Wilhelm Schmid, CEO of A. Lange & Söhne. “Our boutiques are designed to share our watches and unique brand story with each customer, and to capture the skill, determination and imagination used by our watchmakers in Glashütte as they work by hand to perfect every detail of the watch for its owner.”

As with other Lange boutiques worldwide, the Chicago space is deliberately restrained. Materials, lighting and layout are calibrated to support the watches rather than compete with them, reinforcing the brand’s view of fine watchmaking as an understated expression of luxury.

The choice of Tribune Tower adds a further layer of resonance. The building was completed in 1925 and was once the headquarters of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago Tribune. The façade incorporates nearly 150 fragments of historically significant architecture gathered from around the world, including a piece of the Berlin Wall that was added in 1990.

That year carries great significance for A. Lange & Söhne. In the immediate aftermath of the Wall’s fall, Walter Lange re-established his family’s manufacture in Glashütte, reviving a name that had all but vanished following post-war expropriation of businesses in the former East Germany.

For Lange’s leadership in the region, the opening represents both a milestone and an invitation. “We’re thrilled to make the historic Tribune Tower our home in Chicago, and the opening of our new boutique marks an important milestone for our retail network in the Americas,” says Charles Langlois, Brand President, Americas. “Chicago is a world-class destination for watch enthusiasts, and we look forward to inviting them to discover our unwavering commitment to precision, tradition, and timeless elegance.”

The Chicago boutique reflects a consistent approach to retail expansion. Recent openings in cities such as London, Singapore and Shanghai point to a strategy defined by selectivity rather than scale — fewer boutiques, but deeper engagement within each. At a time when much of the luxury industry is reassessing the role of physical retail, Lange is reaffirming the importance of spaces where its watches can be understood as they were intended.
