The Revolutionary List: 30 Pioneering Watches – the Jacob & Co. Astronomia Revolution
This year, Revolution turns 20. Two decades of chronicling watches, people and ideas have given us a front-row seat to a remarkable story: how an age-old craft has both preserved its soul and reinvented itself for the 21st century. To celebrate, we’ve chosen over 100 names and milestones that, for us, define the era so far. From leaders to watches, you can see the whole list here.
The Astronomia has always been one of Jacob & Co.’s signatures, a watch that blends architecture, spectacle and technical daring. First launched in 2014, it stood out for its vertical movement tower and orbiting arms, which circled the dial once every 20 minutes.
The Astronomia Revolution of 2023 takes that idea and turns up the speed. The carrier now makes a full revolution every 60 seconds, so the entire movement on the dial doubles as a sweeping seconds hand. On the wrist, the effect is electric. Components whirl around the dial in constant motion, turning mechanics into pure theater.
Driving this performance is a new constant-force system. The Revolution consumes vast energy to spin its one-minute carrier, and without control, the escapement would be hammered by excess torque. A typical one-second remontoir was still too rough, so Jacob & Co. built one that releases energy six times a second, matching the 3Hz balance. This 1/6th-second remontoir — the fastest in the world — keeps the movement precise even under extreme loads.
The tourbillon is still a spectacle. It is a triple-axis construction: the cage rotates in 15 seconds, the arm turns once per minute, and the entire movement orbits the dial in the same span. Stacked together, these rotations create a choreography of motion that, combined with the faster one-minute carrier, gives the Astronomia Revolution an energy no static dial could match.

Just as striking is the new design language. The lavish gemstones and painted celestial motifs of earlier Astronomia models have been set aside in favor of a more minimalist design language. Here, a polished plate engraved with a honeycomb pattern serves as the backdrop, accented only by a single ruby that makes a 15-second rotation. The effect is pared down yet striking, allowing the mechanics to take center stage.
