Wei Koh once made a proclamation that there are two eras in watchmaking — the one before Richard Mille, and the one after. As a brand, Richard Mille has pushed the boundaries of horology to unprecedented horizons and there can be no greater evidence of this fact than the RM50-03 McLaren F1 that was launched at SIHH this year. It is remarkable for the first use ever of Graphene in a watch case, in itself an unprecedented milestone in material sciences, engineering and watchmaking. Ah, the eternal dilemma of what to get the man who has access to just about any watch on the planet! For Wei, I’d like Santa to bring an MB&F HM6 Alien Nation. Not only is it a great watch and talking piece, it also embodies the same revolutionary spirit in modern watchmaking that was at the genesis of Revolution itself. Not to mention that the added luminescence may prove useful on nocturnal escapades or through the clouds of cigar smoke.

What can you give to a man who may have everything? This is a very common question, particularly during Christmas time, but I can’t help but ask it because our boss Wei Koh fits the bill to perfection. So, I decided to go for something quite unique which — by definition — means that it would be impossible for him to have another timepiece similar to the De Bethune DB28 “Kind of Blue” Tourbillon Meteorite, a watch as distinctive as Wei.

The making of this watch started some 5,000 years ago in a galaxy far, far away (I assume) as a piece of rock that fell somewhere in Argentina. Much, much later someone thought of making something wonderful with it. Many hours of work with diamond tools (meteorites are as hard as a mobster’s heart) and carefully placed gold dots remind us of the stars, the homeland of this fabulous dial full of warm tones that harmonize with the blue finishing of the ethereal titanium case. A rotating tourbillon completes this masterpiece, reminding us of the eternal beauty of the circular movement that is a key part of our universe.

Wei Koh is an enigma of a man, one who has refined taste, and sometimes what he chooses to wear is wildly surprising. To me, Wei is a warrior, fighting for a return to quality and style. In the past year of working closely with Wei Koh, in pushing out our digital front, no watch have I seen receive more wrist time on the man than his De Bethune DB28 “Kind of Blue”. More than that, in the many moments he’s unbuckled it from his wrist to place it in the hands of an inquiring friend, while explaining the beauty of the blued titanium timepiece, the sheer sound of respect he holds for the work of Denis Flageollet never failed to ring clear.

Therefore, when De Bethune showcased its submission for Only Watch 2017 — the DB1318, a unique clock housed in a structure inspired by the architecture of the Monaco Yacht Club — it wasn’t hard to think of the ideal person to own and cherish one of Flageollet’s most special creations for the year 2017.

Choosing a watch for the big boss for Christmas is more than an editorial exercise, it is a test of knowledge, good taste and know-how that could very well put our professional relationship in jeopardy should I get it wrong! Do I go for something classic and timeless, or take a risk with something more daring and different? After much deliberation, I have decided on the Tudor Black Bay Bronze Blue Bucherer, a limited edition for the Swiss-based retailer in a bronze case with a navy blue dial and matching NATO strap with a bronze-colored stripe. Now, I know Wei already has a Black Bay, so I am taking a chance proposing something that he already has, but I also know how much he loves dressing in different hues of blue, and you can never have too many Tudors, so fingers crossed I’m on the right track and can keep my job!
