Paying Tribute to One of the Greats with the Bremont Hawking
Meet the Bremont Hawking, a limited edition dedicated to and in honour of pioneering theoretical physicist Professor Stephen Hawking. It’s hard to overstate Professor Hawking’s impact on the scientific world, both in terms of his academic work — notably in quantum mechanics and relativity, but also in the realm of popular science. His 1988 book, A Brief History of Time introduced physics to a whole new audience, and was wildly popular, selling more than 10 million copies.
The first three models are a dressy, 41mm watch with a large date (Bremont’s first) and retrograde seconds hand, offered in 388 pieces for the steel model, and 88 pieces for the white and gold versions. The choice of the ’88’ is inspired by the year of publication of his most popular work. In addition to these larger models, Bremont has also released the Hawking Quantum, an 88-piece steel edition in with a 34mm case, meteorite dial and diamond-set bezel and indices that are aimed squarely at the British brand’s female fans. And while the dials of all the models are appealing (the larger model also boasts in inner dial section with black hole inspired spiral etching), it’s the back of the watch that steals the show. The more petite model has a black hole inspired tungsten inlaid with a round sliver of wood from Stephen Hawking’s desk — a prized possession.
The design is versatile, and the nods to Hawking, while numerous, manage not to overpower the overall package. Clearly, Bremont’s experience in this sort of watch design has paid off. It’s also worth noting that some of the proceeds from the sales of these watches will go to supporting those who live with Motor Neurone Disease.
