The Low-Down

No one reading this will be a stranger to the Divers Sixty-Five. The plucky, retro-styled dive watch has been a staple for Oris, and every year we’re treated to new versions and design interpretations. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a take as pared back as this one, though. Fratello’s ‘Star’ version offers a 40mm steel case, a black dial and bezel, some creamy lume and a very cool trapezoidal date window. There’s a story behind the simplicity. This watch is based on a model from 1968, three years a after the brand’s first dive watch. This historic piece is quite significant, and the clue is the ‘Star’ text on the dial. It’s not referring to an astronomical event, but rather a Swiss Watch Stature. Apparently, only watches with a Swiss lever escapement could bear the Star designation, and for Oris, this marked a significant improvement from the pin-pallet movements they had been using prior.

IMHO

While the ‘story’ behind this watch is that it’s a link to Oris’ past, the reality for most people is something quite different. For them, it’s simply a well-designed, well-made watch suitable for pretty much anything you throw at it. It will look great with a suit, and you don’t need to worry about babying it too much. It’s got retro charms and modern flair. You can’t go wrong. This watch is limited to 300 pieces in total, with 250 being available from Fratello’s shop, and the other 50 from Oris boutiques.
