Introducing Ulysse Nardin’s Diver Lemon Shark
The Low-Down
Renowned for their marine watches, in recent years Ulysse Nardin has thrown its considerable weight and influence behind shark conservation around the world.
In honor of World Ocean Day, the Le Locle brand has launched the limited-edition Diver Lemon Shark, a 42mm Diver designed specifically for the deep.
Found mainly in Florida, Lemon sharks are named for their yellow-brown skin that helps them to camouflage highly effectively in the sandy, tropical waters they inhabit. They are classified as a near threatened species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The largest recorded lemon shark was measured at 3.4 meters (11.3 feet) and weighed 184 kilograms. Although highly efficient and relentless ocean predators, sharks are often misjudged, as humans are not the natural prey of any shark species.
To celebrate the launch, Ulysse Nardin has teamed up with world-renowned shark experts by bringing together two organizations: OCEARCH and the FIU Medina Aquarius Program in the Florida International University Institute of Environment. Chris Fischer, Founder Expedition Leader of OCEARCH, says “we need to speed up scientific discoveries if we are going to have any chance of leaving healthy oceans behind for our grandchildren.”
Limited to just 300 pieces, the clean, minimalist dial reveals a splash of yellow on the unidirectional bezel, dial, crown and band all of which pay homage to the lemon shark.
With a discreet date window at 6 o’ clock, the second hand glides over the dial in vibrant yellow. Super-Luminova indexes are featured in ‘shark gray’ and adorn the dial, while a yellow 0 marks the 12 o’clock position on the bezel. The screw-down crown also features the Ulysse Nardin anchor and initials in lemon yellow.
IMHO
Ulysse Nardin’s partners for this new diver include OCEARCH, which has developed a Shark Tracker App. This app allows scientists and the public alike to follow in real time with sharks that have been previously tagged by the organization and its collaborators. The ability to follow the sharks gives greater access to study more about their movement in the ocean.
Friend of the brand, photographer Fred Buyle, uses his knowledge and experience to dive with scientists as they approach the sharks, leading them to the nurseries where they give live births and documenting their tagging process.
Bravo Ulysse Nardin!
