Introducing the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Tokyo 2020
The Low-Down
In 100 days, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will officially begin. If ever a single sentence could encapsulate just how wild the world has been for the last 18 month, it might be that one. But the world rolls on, and so Omega has finally unveiled another special edition Olympic watch, the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Tokyo 2020. Already the Seamaster Diver 300M is a watch of unimpeachable style and quality, and the links to what is sure to be one of the most memorable Olympiads in recent history is just the icing on the proverbial cake.
IMHO
At this point, the fundamentals of the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M should be familiar to everyone. The current generation was introduced in 2018, but the model dates back much further, to the mid-90s, where it burst into the popular consciousness thanks to a turn on Bond’s wrist in GoldenEye. It’s an icon of modern sports watches, and this version is undoubtedly a looker. The case is 42mm, in stainless steel and the bezel insert is a fetching blue ceramic, which offsets the polished white ceramic dial with its laser-etched wave pattern quite nicely indeed. The bezel also pairs well with the blued skeletonised broad sword hands and the finer dark blue frames around the heavily lumed hour markers. The Seamaster text is in red, bringing the red, white and blue theme of this watch (inspired by the Tokyo 2020 emblem) neatly together.
An Olympic edition wouldn’t be complete without a custom caseback, some commemorative text and a special presentation box, so naturally, that’s what Omega delivers here. This watch isn’t just for sports fans, as the Olympic links are very restrained. If Omega released this as a mainline release, I’m confident the attractive colour scheme would make it a commercial success. But if you’re a huge Olympics buff, well, what’s stopping you.
