One of a trio of ‘Professional’ watches Omega debuted in 1957; the original Railmaster debuted alongside the Speedmaster and the Seamaster. And like its famous siblings, the Railmaster was very much a functional tool; a precise timekeeper that prioritised legibility and reliability. The Railmaster was not made for divers or racers — it was made for scientists. The hazardous environment it was built to overcome wasn’t the deeps of the ocean or the racetrack — it was made for the lab, built to overcome the invisible enemy of the watchmaker, magnetism. Featuring a soft-iron Faraday cage to combat the effects of magnetic fields on the finely tuned movement, the Railmaster was a pioneering piece of engineering.
This Omega Railmaster, in a classic case size of 39m, is a design that was first released back in 2003 and is from a transitional time for the great brand. It’s rated to 150m and powered by the Co-Axial calibre 2500, based on a proven ETA base. Where this watch really stands out though, is the purity and simplicity of the design. The lyre lugs so synonymous with Omega are in evidence, and the dial, flat black with luminous dagger hands and a symmetrical 3,6,9 layout, is pure perfection. Add to this versatile dial the fact that the lugs are 20mm, and you’ve got a watch that looks good on anything and with any outfit.
